Top 10 Stoner Movies
Marijuana and the movies have always gone hand in hand. Whether its watching a movie while high or watching movies of people getting high, weed and movies are a perfect combination. Here are my ten favourite stoner movies.
10. Soul Plane
Soul Plane is just plain and simple fun. This raunchy comedy isn’t about weed, but its roughly 86 minutes of toilet humour, raunchy jokes and it takes pleasure in stomping on any notion of political correctness.
One of Kevin Hart’s first starting roles and a cast that includes Snoop Dog as a “high as a kite” pilot this is a guilty pleasure that should be enjoyed with your best “buds”. Just don’t take the movie too serious and you’ll have a great time.
9. Savages
Savages is not your typical “stoner” movie, this Oliver Stone directed flick features an all-star cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Benicio Del Toro, John Travolta and Selma Hayak. About three friends growing weed brought back from Afghanistan is an excellent action thriller that shouldn’t be missed.
The movie didn’t get the recognition it deserves but is definitely a sleeper hit.
8. How High
How awesome would it be to have a strain of cannabis that makes you smarter? That’s the plot of this stoner comedy starting Redman and Method Man. Just don’t take How High too seriously as with most stoner comedies. How High is definitely one of those films out of left field but fun to watch when you’re on chronic.
7. Friday
The stoner comedy written by Ice Cube was such a hit that it spawned two more sequels. The writing, acting and performances were spot on. Chris Tucker and Ice Cube made the perfect duo as a weed dealer and his best friend.
Friday is so hilarious that you’ll laugh even when you’re not stoned. I would recommended two sittings for comedy lovers. One while not medicated and another when high.
6. Harold & Kumar go to White Castle
Harold & Kumar go to White Castle is a great stoner film because let’s face it, which of us has not gone through the same problems as the titular stars? A spin-off of the American Pie franchise, the movie did so great it spawned two more sequels that follow a similar framework.
Another one that you shouldn’t miss, also check out Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas for more laughs.
5. Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke
The original stoners Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong star in the movie that made the “stoner film” genre. This is a must watch for all stoner movie fans. Up in Smoke is the inspiration for pretty much all stoner comedies from Half Baked to Harold & Kumar and you can even find it’s influence on mainstream comedies like Dumb and Dumber. The premise of this movie is just so ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh. It’s just an excuse for stars Cheech & Chong to smoke some weed.
4. Ted
Who would have thought a movie about a loud potty mouth teddy bear in the real world would work, but Ted MacFarlane pulled it all together in this comedy that mixes vulgar shock humour with tons of pop-culture references. Ted did so well that it even spawned a sequel. I had a feeling the writers were definitely medicated when they came up with this movie. Although the sequel was a bit lack-lustre it’s worth still worth a watch when you’re high.
3. Dazed and Confused
Dazed and Confused is a bit different than the other films on this list as it leans more towards being a drama. This coming of age film is warmer and more genuine than others on this list.
This is definitely a must watch for everyone the film was very smartly written and the marijuana induced dialogue very genuine.
2. Half Baked
Dave Chapelle and weed created in a laboratory? What more do you need to know, go grab this movie right now! Although this is lower on other’s list it holds a special spot for me as this was the first stoner comedy got high to, to this day that nostalgia feeling still hits me when I watch this.
1. Pineapple Express
Pineapple Express is probably not the best movie on this list, it follows the same chronic buddy formula used by other stoner comedies. But the reason for it’s position on this list is the fact that this one film was able to popularize the Pineapple Express marijuana strain to heights not seen before for a marijuana strain. Although the movie embellishes on the strains effects a bit, it does entertain and has gotten better with repeated viewings.
